Collaboration to Enhance Weather Forecasting in Odesa
The Mayor of Odesa, Gennady Trukhanov, held a meeting with Viktor Sytov, the director of the Hydrometeorological Center for the Black and Azov Seas.
During the conversation, the participants discussed the specifics of an emergency situation, forecasting methods, and options for improving cooperation between meteorological services and local authorities.
According to Viktor Sytov, the Center has 12 weather stations, four of which are marine. However, the existing equipment does not provide the necessary accuracy: for example, the stations can track cloud cover but cannot accurately predict precipitation amounts.
The director of the Hydrometeorological Center noted that the southern regions, especially coastal cities, require more precise data that could be provided by modern locators already installed in Lviv and the Kyiv region at the state's expense.
"The range of the Finnish equipment is up to 300 km. It could cover the entire southern region, including Vinnytsia. We have already reported this to the central government. Although such equipment is costly, its necessity is beyond doubt. It would allow for accurate determination of precipitation amounts and their localization, potentially preventing tragic outcomes," emphasized the director of the Hydrometeorological Center.
Following the meeting, the Mayor of Odesa instructed relevant deputies, in cooperation with the Hydrometeorological Center's administration, to prepare a technical specification and justification for the importance of installing such a locator in Odesa.
Additionally, Gennady Trukhanov plans to reach out to partner cities for support of the initiative aimed at enhancing the safety of residents.
"It is critically important for us that weather forecasts are as complete and accurate as possible, because for local authorities, it is not just information for consideration. Based on meteorological data, we determine our emergency response plans and further actions," stressed Gennady Trukhanov.
