Blossoming of Steppe Almond in Odesa Region

In the northern part of the Odesa region, the rare steppe almond has begun to bloom actively. This plant is not only uncommon but also plays an essential role for humans, being widely used across various industries.

This information was reported by the State Ecological Inspection of the Southwestern District.

Characteristics of Almond

Near the village of Levadivka in the Berezivka district, one of Ukraine's most beautiful plants — the steppe almond — has bloomed. It is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine and is considered regionally rare. Typically, it can be found on slopes, in forest clearings, rocky gorges, and ravines. Almond oil is widely utilized in the cosmetics industry, particularly in the production of creams, shampoos, conditioners, and balms.

"Besides that, almond plays a crucial role in soil protection — its powerful root system stabilizes sloping terrains, preventing erosion. The fruits of the almond are rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins, and essential oils," states the message from the State Ecological Inspection of the Southwestern District.

Ecologists add: all parts of the almond contain amygdalin — a substance that can release cyanide, which is toxic to humans. Therefore, caution is advised when dealing with this plant.
