Winter Preparation: Measures by the City Roads Utility
To ensure road safety and effective response to winter weather, the City Roads Utility of Odesa is implementing a range of measures.
Traditionally, by early December, the utility completes street cleaning and reconfigures its equipment. Water tanks are removed from washing vehicles and replaced with salt-sand spreaders.
Winter attachments are installed, with most vehicles outfitted with snow plows. All equipment undergoes inspection and preventive maintenance. After preparation, the work of special machinery will be tested on the utility's premises.
The City Roads Utility has snow removal machines, sand spreaders, graders, excavators, and various other equipment. In total, for the 2025-2026 winter season, 104 units of machinery and 560 workers will be involved in snow removal and combating icy conditions.
As of December 4, the equipment is already modified and ready for winter use.
The utility is also preparing a sand-salt mixture for de-icing. In anticipation of worsening weather, 10,363 tons of reagents have been secured for treating road surfaces.
The City Roads Utility has developed 17 routes for snow removal vehicles, ensuring prompt clearance of roads from snow drifts and ice. Additionally, there are 54 routes specifically for salting streets to reduce road hazards during icy conditions.
Since December 1, 2025, around-the-clock shifts of the City Roads Utility crews have been initiated for quick response to worsening weather. Rooms for on-duty personnel have been prepared, and staff operating the machinery have been provided with winter clothing.
