This day was established by the Presidential Decree of Ukraine on August 23, 2019, to honor the memory of soldiers and volunteers who sacrificed their lives for our country.
The date of August 29 was chosen intentionally, as ten years ago, during the Russo-Ukrainian War, a heroic breakthrough of Ukrainian troops occurred in Ilovaisk, where the largest number of soldiers lost their lives.
Sunflowers have become the symbol of this day, as many defenders of Ukraine sacrificed their lives in the fields of sunflowers for the freedom of our nation.
On August 29, we remember not only the heroes of the Ilovaisk tragedy but also the thousands of defenders who have fallen since the war began in 2014, which has presented a significant challenge for our nation.
