Criminal Sentenced for Stealing Elderly Man's Phone

A repeat offender stole a phone from an elderly victim, initially offering to help him navigate the city. For this offense, he will spend seven years behind bars.

Recall that the incident occurred in February this year in the Primorsky district of Odessa. During lunchtime, a passerby noticed a disoriented elderly man who had come from Berezivka for business. Pretending to be helpful, the criminal offered to show the 62-year-old grandfather the necessary route, and at an opportune moment, snatched the mobile phone sticking out of his pocket.

Police tracked down the perpetrator in a neighboring block and seized the stolen phone, which was returned to its owner.

At the time of the robbery, the 39-year-old Odessa resident already had previous convictions for property crimes and drug offenses. During the investigation, the court imposed a preventive measure of detention with the possibility of bail, which he did not utilize.

Gathering sufficient evidence, investigators charged the defendant under part 4 of article 186 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This pertains to the open theft of someone else's property, meaning robbery committed under martial law. After completing the pre-trial investigation under the procedural guidance of the Primorsky District Prosecutor's Office of Odessa, law enforcement sent the indictment to court.

The court, having reviewed the evidence, found the defendant guilty of robbery and sentenced him to seven years in prison.
