Odessa's Collaboration with South Korean Corporation on Environmental Projects
With the support of the State Agency for Restoration and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine, a significant meeting took place in the Kyiv office of the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development, involving Odessa's mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov and his deputy Hanna Pozdnyakova with representatives from the South Korean company POSCO E&C, a global leader in infrastructure construction.
The corporation has already constructed over 30 waste-to-energy plants in various countries. According to Hanna Pozdnyakova, the most valuable experience is the construction of such a plant in Warsaw, which she visited during her business trip in March. It was built following European legislation and EU environmental standards, to which Ukraine is integrating its national laws. The comprehensive waste management approach implemented in Warsaw aligns with the concept Odessa is currently studying.
This was the first dialogue with POSCO E&C representatives regarding the potential construction of a waste-to-energy plant in Odessa.
“We have strong ties with Ukraine and have already implemented projects in the metallurgy and agro-industrial sectors, particularly in Mykolaiv, and we hope for further active collaboration,” noted the vice president of the South Korean corporation, Mr. Kim Yong Hyun.
The infrastructure project has already been approved by the relevant ministry and included in the city's heating supply scheme. Following the negotiations, the parties agreed to work on the organizational and technical issues necessary for the project's implementation.
“We have the support of the government and all the prerequisites to realize this important project for Odessa. I hope we can start it as soon as possible. First, it is an ecological initiative, and secondly, it involves the construction of heat and electricity generation, which is extremely necessary for our city,” emphasized Odessa's mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov.
