Reviving Antiquity in Odessa: Roman Camp on Deribasivska
On Deribasivska street in Odessa, a unique festival is taking place where Roman legionnaires can be seen. They will stay here for two days to showcase their culture and traditions. From helmets to authentic costumes, everyone is invited to dive into the atmosphere of ancient Rome.
Journalists from Novyny.LIVE visited the event and witnessed the preparations for the festival.
Romans' Camp in the Square
The Romans are preparing for an outdoor festival where coin minting and traditional weapon demonstrations will occur. A real Roman camp will be set up on Deribasivska starting tomorrow. Currently, the preparations are underway: tents are being erected, armor is being laid out, and costumes are being tried on. Tomorrow, everything will be ready for visitors.
"We had hoped to open our Roman camp earlier, but the weather interrupted our plans. Tomorrow, everything will operate at full capacity. The Romans indeed were present in the Odessa region, so we are recreating their history here," — said organizer Anatolii Prochenko.
Historical Costumes
Everything is thought out in detail: from the location to the costumes, which adhere to historical standards. Some items have documents proving their authenticity, including dates and archaeological sources.
"I am wearing a lorica segmentata, the armor of a Roman soldier. This is a Gladius sword — short and effective for thrusting. The shield is a scutum. This is how the Roman army looked during the time of Christ," — said Alexander.
On Saturday and Sunday, everyone will have the chance to experience the atmosphere of the Roman camp. Guests are invited to learn more about the armor and weapons, and even try their hand at being a legionnaire.
Grand Reconstruction
The finale will be a large-scale Easter reconstruction, held for over 12 years. This year, it takes on special significance as an invitation to deeper reflection on events from two millennia ago. In the heart of modern Odessa, the world of antiquity will come to life, where every movement, costume, or replica — is not just decor but an attempt to feel the flow of history.
"There will be a grand Easter reconstruction on Deribasivska. Imagine, there will be six stages with various performances. Everything will start with the grand entrance of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem on a live donkey," — shared organizer Anatolii.
The historical reconstruction — is not just a spectacular event but a genuine journey through time. It allows residents and guests of Odessa not only to observe but to personally touch the past, feel the rhythm of life of the Roman legion, immerse themselves in the atmosphere of antiquity, and reconsider significant historical moments.
