Celebrating Diversity: World Down Syndrome Day
March 21 marks the International Day for People with Down Syndrome.
In Odessa, there are over 150 individuals with this syndrome. To raise awareness and combat stereotypes, a photo exhibition featuring Odessa families with individuals who have genetic anomalies was organized at the Center for Integrated Social Services.
The event was greeted by Olena Kytayska, Director of the Department of Labor and Social Policy of the Odessa City Council, who wished everyone peace and patience.
Lidia Ostrohladova, mother of two children with Down syndrome, expressed gratitude for the support in addressing issues faced by individuals with disabilities.
Representatives from the NGOs “Guarantee of the Future,” “Special Children,” and “Healthy Society” also participated in the event.
At the end of the meeting, representatives of the Department presented special guests with gifts.
Additionally, employees from the district social protection departments in Odessa joined the worldwide flash mob “Colorful Socks,” attaching an odd number of colorful socks to their outerwear as a symbol of support for people with Down syndrome.
