Getting Driver's License in Ukraine: What You Need to Know

The freedom of driving, independence, and new opportunities – all these become possible with the ability to drive a car. However, it requires not only learning the theory but also reaching a certain age.

Did you know that there is no upper age limit for obtaining a driver's license in Ukraine? Older individuals can obtain a license if they have no medical contraindications. However, the law clearly defines the minimum age for obtaining a license.

Therefore, starting from the age of 16, it is possible to undergo training and obtain a driver's license in Ukraine, but this only applies to categories A and A1, which include mopeds and motorcycles. To drive trucks with trailers, one must be at least 19 years old, and for trolleybuses and trams, the minimum age is 21 years.

According to the Law of Ukraine "On Road Traffic", the right to drive is granted to individuals who have reached:

16 years – category A1, A;
18 years – categories B1, B, C1, C;
19 years – categories BE, C1E, CE;
21 years – categories D1, D, D1E, DE, T.
Step-by-step guide

To obtain a driver's license, one must learn the traffic rules according to the standard training program. This can be done either independently or at an accredited driving school. After that, one must pass a theoretical exam at the MVS service center. Following successful completion of the test, the candidate undergoes practical training at the driving school and takes an internal practical exam, then goes to the MVS.

To take the exams at the MVS service center, you need to prepare a set of documents:

Ukrainian citizen passport with a registration mark or an ID card or passport for traveling abroad (to be provided along with a residence certificate);
medical certificate of fitness to drive the chosen category;
registration number of the tax payer's card;
existing driver's license (if obtaining rights for another category).
Note that the cost of the theoretical exam at the MVS service center is 250 UAH, and the practical exam is 420 UAH.

Services at territorial units are provided by prior registration in the E-Registration system or at a self-service terminal located within the MVS service center. Consultations regarding MVS service center services can be obtained by phone (044) 290-19-88 or on the pages of the Main Service Center of the MVS on Facebook and Instagram.
