New Regulations for GMO Registration in Ukraine
The Ukrainian government has approved a new procedure for maintaining the State Register of Genetically Modified Organisms aimed at enhancing consumer safety.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.
The new register will serve as a single state information system that allows for accounting, monitoring, and storage of data regarding all registered GMOs in Ukraine.
The Ministry explained that the implementation of such a register is a necessary step towards ensuring transparency in biotechnology, improving consumer safety, and meeting Ukraine's obligations under the Association Agreement with the EU.
Additionally, the regulation harmonizes Ukrainian legislation with EU acts concerning GMO management, particularly Directive 2001/18/EC on the intentional release of genetically modified organisms into the environment and Commission Decision 2004/204/EC regarding the functioning of registers for recording information on GMOs.
This will facilitate the establishment of a regulatory framework for GMO accounting and control similar to European standards, which will help reduce risks to human health and the environment.
The regulation will take effect in September 2026, concurrently with the new legislation governing genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
