Fire and Traffic Accident Statistics in Ukraine: Alarming Trends
In Ukraine, an average of 240 fires are recorded daily, resulting in approximately four fatalities and five injuries.
This information was shared by Roman Tsyren, head of the Emergency Situations Prevention Department of the State Emergency Service, during a briefing at the "Media Center Ukraine".
Tsyren noted that these figures indicate "alarming trends" when viewed annually.
"On average, two thousand citizens die each year due to fires, while five thousand may suffer injuries," the SES representative emphasized.
The SES also urged Ukrainians to refrain from lighting bonfires in nature during the Easter celebrations.
"Our country's territory has been severely affected by explosive objects. Many have been found in deoccupied areas.
Especially if forests and parks are to be used, I do not recommend starting fires, as this year has seen a significant increase in fires in ecosystems. There is a recorded 68% rise in such incidents," explained Roman Tsyren.
Casualties from emergency situations also include deaths and injuries from traffic accidents, according to Tsyren.
Statistics from the Ministry of Internal Affairs indicate that in 2024, nearly 26,000 accidents with casualties occurred. Over 3,200 people died and more than 32,000 were injured. This represents a 5-9% increase compared to 2023.
As noted by Oleksiy Biloshytskyi, the first deputy head of the Patrol Police Department, the most common cause of traffic accidents with casualties is speeding, accounting for nearly 39.4%.
Other frequent causes of accidents include violations of maneuvering rules, crossing intersections and pedestrian crossings, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.
"If we consider and add traffic accidents, which claim the lives of six thousand of our citizens, these are colossal human losses that we endure," concluded the head of the Emergency Situations Prevention Department.
It is worth noting that only 55 Ukrainians died due to household fires in the first six days of 2025. Fires were caused by electrical short circuits, failure to follow heating appliance safety regulations, and careless handling of fire, including smoking in bed while intoxicated.
