Fraud Arrest in Odesa: Fake Lawyer Caught
The suspect was apprehended immediately after trying to swindle a military conscript out of money. To achieve his goal, the fraudster manipulated his victim, posing as an attorney. The court will determine the fate of the criminal.
Operatives from the Odesa Department of Internal Security in collaboration with investigators from the regional police uncovered a 33-year-old resident of Odesa involved in illegal activities. This was not his first offense in a criminal background.
Despite having a previous conviction for fraud, the criminal decided to continue his illegal activities. He offered a man with military deferment until February 2026 to remove him from military registration for health reasons, demanding $15,000 for his services.
To make his offer convincing, he pretended to be an attorney and claimed to have connections with officials from the local recruitment office. To ensure the man wouldn’t refuse, he resorted to intimidation, threatening to cancel his deferment.
Immediately after receiving the money, law enforcement detained the fraudster under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He has already been charged under Part 3 of Article 369-2 (Abuse of Influence) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which carries a penalty of up to 8 years in prison.
The Odesa Regional Prosecutor's Office is overseeing the proceedings.
