Remembering the Legendary Athlete Sergey Olizarenko
On December 18, 2024, the athletic community mourns the passing of Sergey Olizarenko, a prominent Ukrainian athlete who represented his country at the 1980 Summer Olympics.
During the 1980 Olympics, Sergey competed in the men's 3000 meters steeplechase. He secured a third-place finish in the semifinals with a time of 8:34.2, qualifying for the finals, but unfortunately could not compete due to an Achilles tendon injury.
Sergey was married to Olympic champion Nadia Olizarenko, and together they inspired many with their dedication to sport.
The Odessa City Council and the local sports community express their heartfelt condolences to Sergey Olizarenko's family during this difficult time.
Farewell to Sergey will take place on December 21, 2024: at 10:30 AM – a memorial service at the Holy Assumption Cathedral (70 Preobrazhenska St.), at 12:00 PM – cremation at the Tairov Cemetery crematorium.
