New Artistic Initiative in Odesa

A major project titled «Pleiades: Celebrating 160 Years of the Odesa Art College» is launching at the Odesa Art Museum!

The exhibition will open on June 28 at 4:00 PM at Sofia Street, 5a. This project investigates the history of the Odesa Art College named after Mytrofan Grekov, from its establishment in 1865 to the early years of Ukraine's independence.

The retrospective of student works illustrates the shifts in narratives, political regimes, and ideologies, as well as the role of art within them. Behind each piece lies the life story of real individuals, entire waves of young artists.

By examining the college's history, one can appreciate the significance of artistic education in shaping artists across generations and the institution's role as a cultural hub. Today, despite the challenges of war and Russian aggression, the Odesa «Grekovka» continues its mission, striving to balance tradition with new realities.

«The project «Pleiades: Celebrating 160 Years of the Odesa Art College» has been in the works for over six months. This comprehensive archival and scholarly effort will showcase more than 300 student works displayed throughout the museum's second floor. The history of artistic education in Odesa spans over one and a half centuries of art, resistance, respect, and learning, showcasing generational changes and traditions,» said Kateryna Kulai, the museum director.
