The History and Significance of the Ukrainian National Flag

Every year on August 23, Ukraine celebrates its National Flag Day, a significant symbol of national identity. The flag represents the struggle for freedom and independence. What is the history of this important symbol?

Flag Day: From History to Present

The combination of blue and yellow has been a symbol of Ukraine since the 19th century during the "Spring of Nations." However, its origins can be traced back to the times of Kyivan Rus, where these colors were used in coats of arms and on Cossack banners.

Officially, the blue and yellow flag was recognized on March 22, 1918. After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, these colors became national symbols. The Ukrainian Parliament confirmed the flag's status on January 28, 1992.

The idea of celebrating Flag Day emerged 20 years ago, when President Leonid Kuchma issued a decree in 2004. The date, August 23, was chosen because on this day in 1991, the blue and yellow flag first appeared in the Parliament, marking a significant moment in our independence.

Symbolism of the National Flag

The symbolism of the colors of the flag has several interpretations. The most common version suggests that blue represents a clear sky, while yellow symbolizes fertile wheat fields. Together, these colors signify peace, abundance, and the industrious nature of Ukrainians.

The blue and yellow combination has a millennium-long history. It was first used during the times of Kyivan Rus. Prince Volodymyr the Great had a coat of arms featuring a golden trident on a blue background. In the 13th century, the Galician princes also depicted golden elements on a blue field.

The true recognition of the blue and yellow flag occurred with the proclamation of the Ukrainian People's Republic. The flag was first raised in Stryi on March 14, 1990, and in Kyiv on July 24, 1990.
