Strengthening Ties between Odesa and Varna

The Mayor of Odesa, Gennady Trukhanov, met with the Mayor of the Mladost district of Varna, Hristo Vidolov Hristov.

This meeting was facilitated by the Ambassador of Odesa in Bulgaria, Mark Petrov. Odesa and Varna share fraternal ties and a rich historical background, with the ancient Greek settlement of Odessos located in the area of modern-day Varna.

“We are united by many commonalities — factors that have shaped our relationships and opened up prospects for further development. Varna is a maritime city that welcomed many people from Odesa during the war. Most have integrated into the community while preserving and passing on the Odesa flavor,” noted Hristov.

Gennady Trukhanov announced the upcoming Bulgarian Culture Days in Odesa, scheduled for late October to early November, supported by the General Consulate.

The Mayor of Odesa invited his Bulgarian counterpart to participate in the events and proposed discussing potential collaborative initiatives for the future. The meeting also addressed natural disasters that recently affected both Odesa and Bulgarian cities.

According to Hristov, the abnormal rainfall that struck Bulgaria on October 3 resulted in six confirmed fatalities, with expectations that the death toll may rise to ten. Odesa experienced a severe downpour on September 30, which also claimed lives. This experience of natural disaster serves as a painful reminder of the vulnerability of our cities and the importance of international cooperation in preventing and responding to climate challenges.
