Exhibition on German Heritage in Ukraine
In Regensburg, an exhibition titled "German Heritage in Ukraine and Odesa" has been unveiled.
This exhibition, brought from Odesa, features unique historical materials narrating the life of German settlers since the early 19th century and their impact on the development of Odesa and the surrounding region.
The exhibition consists of three parts: historical, artistic, and contemporary. The historical section was prepared by renowned Odesa historian Oleksandr Surilov. The artistic part showcases works by prominent artist Tetyana Romanenko.
The exhibition also highlights the collaboration between our cities and the assistance Regensburg has provided to Odesa since the onset of the full-scale invasion.
Organized with the support of the Department of Culture, International Cooperation, and European Integration of Odesa and the Department of Culture and Heritage Protection of Regensburg.
During a working visit to Germany, Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov and Regensburg Mayor Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer attended the exhibition opening. The event was also graced by historians, scholars, political and creative figures, and Odesa residents living in Germany.
The Odesa mayor expressed deep gratitude and respect for the support and aid Odesa has received.
"Soon we will mark a thousand days of full-scale war, which also means a thousand days of our heroic defense and the incredible support that European countries, including Regensburg, have provided to Ukraine", said Hennadiy Trukhanov.
The mayor mentioned that during the war, Odesa became a second home for tens of thousands of displaced persons, just as it once was for Ukrainians, Germans, Jews, Greeks, Armenians, Poles, and many others who sought refuge along the Black Sea. Each made their contribution to the city’s development and culture, creating the unique character that makes Odesa special today.
"Germany significantly influenced the agricultural development of the region and, correspondingly, the port and other infrastructures. We highly value this contribution, preserve the memory of it, and continue to develop our relations in many areas. Today we are here to thank you, unveiling interesting, and for some, unknown chapters of our shared history", - noted the Odesa mayor.
Today, our relations with twin city Regensburg are as strong and unwavering as our belief in victory, love for freedom, and independence of Ukraine. We believe in a better future and know that together we can overcome any challenges.
