Give Life: Blood Donation Event at ONU
Odesa National University named after I. I. Mechnikov is celebrating its 160th anniversary with a blood donation campaign titled “Become a Donor! Save a Life!” involving the administration, labor union, and student government.
This initiative is part of the university project “HEALTH, MOVEMENT, EDUCATION — the university lives and acts!”
“The goal of the campaign is to gather 160 donors in honor of our university’s anniversary, uniting the community to save the lives of soldiers and those in need of medical assistance,” said the campaign initiator, Vadym Penov, an associate professor at the Department of Physiology, Health and Safety, and head of the labor union at ONU.
The blood collection will take place on the university grounds with the assistance of medical staff from the Odesa Regional Blood Transfusion Station.
The campaign began at the ONU branch on Shampanskoho Lane and will continue next week at the library and other university buildings.
Students, faculty, and staff have eagerly participated in donating blood. In just the first two days of the campaign, over 70 individuals have donated blood. Each participant received a promotional gift from the “Donor Odesa” project — a sticker featuring a cat named Sonya, the mascot for promoting blood donation in Odesa.
Additionally, within the framework of the “Donor Odesa” project, informational discussions have been held on common questions regarding blood donation with students from the Vocational College and members of the Scientific Council of the Biological Faculty at ONU.
Promotion of blood donation at Mechnikov University occurred as part of the city’s charitable initiative “Weeks of Good Deeds.”

Since the onset of the full-scale war, the “Donor Odesa” project has been facilitating blood donor recruitment for medical facilities in the city. During this time, over 12,000 blood donations have been made thanks to the project.
A large-scale information campaign to promote blood donation and inform about current needs for blood donations is conducted with the ongoing support of the Department of Information and Digital Solutions of the Odesa City Council. This involves the use of the Telegram channel “Odesa.Official” and the MISTO mobile application, which can be downloaded via the provided link.
