Exhibition Opening: The Legacy of Hennadiy Harmyder
On March 1, 2025, the Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art hosted a grand opening of the exhibition dedicated to the distinguished artist Hennadiy Harmyder.
Hennadiy Vasylovych Harmyder was a Ukrainian graphic artist and painter renowned for his illustrations and ex-libris. His works span various techniques, including oil painting and etching, with a strong focus on urban landscapes. His portfolio also includes still lifes and portraits that captivate through their depth and emotion. He illustrated about 200 books and created over 20 ex-libris.
“We take pride in the artistic legacy of Hennadiy Harmyder who depicted Odessa in his works. His pieces are showcased in museums worldwide, in private collections, and, of course, in the homes of Odessans,” noted Ivan Liptuga, the director of the Department of International Cooperation of the Odessa City Council.
During the exhibition opening, artists, journalists, and art historians shared insights about Hennadiy Harmyder's creative journey.
The exhibition features over 100 pieces created during his 50 years of artistic activity.
Included are etchings from beloved series such as “Odessa in the Early 19th Century” and “Odessa Life at the Turn of the 20th Century.”
A unique work on display is a map of the historical center of Odessa, produced using etching techniques. It consists of nine separately printed parts, and only a few copies exist today.
The series “My Ukraine” is filled with warmth and lyricism, showcasing landscapes and everyday life from various regions of Ukraine.
Another fascinating series, “10 Days on a Trimaran,” captures the thrilling dialogue between humans and the sea.
Harmyder's paintings also attract considerable interest, although his large-scale works were last exhibited in 2005.
This year, on February 21, Hennadiy Harmyder would have turned 80 years old. He passed away on March 16, 2023, leaving behind a vast artistic legacy. His works are housed in 27 museums across Ukraine.
The Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art is open daily from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, except Wednesdays.
