New Educational Program for High School

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has introduced a new educational program for high schools. This document is fundamental for implementing the reform.

The program allows students in grades 10-12 to choose their educational path.

Choosing an educational profile. Students can select a set of subjects according to their chosen profile. For instance, by opting for a physical-mathematical profile, students will delve deeper into physics and mathematics.

Choosing additional courses. Students can select subjects/courses that complement their profile. For example, for a mathematical profile, a course in computer science might be available.

Choosing non-profile courses. Students are entitled to select courses that promote holistic development, such as painting or music while studying mathematics.

Furthermore, the curriculum includes mandatory subjects for all students that are required for passing the state certification after grade 12 (in the form of ZNO/NMT) over three years.

Main changes in the typical educational program:

  • The ability to form flexible groups for studying elective subjects.
  • Reduction in the number of mandatory subjects. Previously, in 11th grade, students had to cover at least 14 subjects; now, in 12th grade, this can be reduced to 5-8 (depending on the profile).
  • Schools can independently develop programs for non-profile courses based on their needs.

Hours allocated for different subjects

The typical educational program includes learning plans (tables with hour allocations) for three clusters:

  • Linguistic and literary
  • Social and humanitarian
  • STEM

Within these clusters, lyceums will be able to create diverse profiles.

10th grade — adaptation cycle (students can change profiles)

  • In the first semester of 10th grade, the number of hours for mandatory subjects is the same for all students. This will help to compensate for potential educational losses and adapt to new formats of learning.
  • Students will have hours for elective subjects in the first semester.
  • In the second semester, the number of hours for profile subjects will increase.

11th-12th grades — profile cycle

  • The curriculum provides more hours for studying the chosen profile and elective subjects.
  • Each year, this number will increase, while the hours for mandatory subjects will decrease.
