Exploring the Fascinating World of Forensics for Students

Forensic experts from the Odesa District Police Department No. 1 organized an exciting educational event for students at a local school, where children discovered how police solve crimes and even took part in their own «investigation».

The specialists explained that the work of a forensic scientist begins with a thorough examination of the crime scene. Their attentiveness and ability to notice small details are crucial in finding evidence. The police demonstrated the special kits stored in their forensic bags.

«Inside these bags are dozens of tools, each with its own purpose. For example, fingerprint kits help identify who has touched specific objects. Powders and brushes make these prints visible, which can then be transferred onto special film. Ultraviolet lamps help locate traces invisible to the naked eye, such as drops of biological fluids. Magnifying glasses and tweezers are necessary for carefully collecting small pieces of evidence like hair, fabric fibers, and glass shards. Special evidence bags ensure proper storage of physical evidence for laboratory analysis», shared forensic expert Major Zhanna Novakivska from the Forensic Support Sector of the Odesa District Police Department No. 1.

After the theoretical part, students moved on to practical activities. They donned protective suits, gloves, and shoe covers to avoid leaving their own traces and attempted to «collect evidence». The children examined items with magnifying glasses, took fingerprints of each other, worked with powders, and even modeled their own crime scene, inventing a «crime story».

The police assisted and explained every step — how to properly photograph findings, how to document information in reports, and why it's important to preserve the integrity of the evidence.
This interactive event not only introduced teenagers to the work of forensic scientists but also highlighted how this profession requires precision, analytical thinking, and responsibility.

At the end of the meeting, law enforcement invited high school students to consider joining the police force in the future, particularly the forensic division. Forensic specialists play a crucial role in establishing the truth, apprehending criminals, and restoring justice — no investigation is complete without them.
