Historic Organ Transplant in Odesa
A remarkable event in medicine occurred in Odesa: for the first time in the history of the regional clinical hospital, a multi-organ retrieval and transplant was performed. This was reported by the head of the OVA, Oleg Kiper.
This complex procedure saved the lives of three seriously ill patients who had been waiting for this opportunity for years.
The donor was a patient with a severe ischemic stroke. When the medical board confirmed brain death, the family made a brave and noble decision — they consented to the transplant.
As a result, three patients received a new lease on life:
- A 49-year-old former military man — received a kidney;
- A 31-year-old internally displaced person from Kherson region — received a kidney;
- A 24-year-old patient — received a heart.
The incredible work was carried out by the medical team from the transplant and dialysis department of the Odesa regional clinical hospital in collaboration with colleagues from the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the O.O. Shalimov National Scientific Center. Sincere thanks to everyone who was involved in this noble mission.
