Fire Hazards: Consequences of Managerial Negligence
The actions of a public official last year resulted in repeated cases of waste self-ignition and significant fires. Firefighters battled the flames for over a week. The accused faces up to 5 years in prison, as reported by the police.
Investigators determined that the director of the municipal enterprise, responsible for collecting household waste, failed to adhere to the necessary maintenance standards for the landfill assigned to his company. Specifically, the official neglected to implement measures for the extraction and disposal of biogas generated from waste decomposition and did not provide security for the landfill.
This negligence led to multiple incidents of waste self-ignition, spreading over a large area, which took firefighters more than a week to extinguish. According to expert assessments, the damage caused to the environment from pollutant emissions exceeded 4 million 750 thousand Hryvnias.
"Having gathered sufficient evidence, investigators charged the individual under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This includes negligence in office (part 2 of article 367) and air pollution with harmful substances that pose risks to human life and health as well as the environment (part 2 of article 241)" - stated the head of the Odessa District Police Department No. 2, Andriy Donets.
«For the committed offense, the accused faces imprisonment for up to five years, along with a prohibition from holding certain positions for up to three years. The pre-trial investigation, conducted under the procedural guidance of the Bilayaivka District Prosecutor's Office, has been completed. The indictment has been sent to court», - added Police Colonel Andriy Donets.
