Decline in Cargo Handling at Ukrainian Ports

In the first quarter of 2025, Ukrainian ports processed 23 million tons of cargo, which is 4.8 million tons less than in the same period last year.

This information was reported by the Administration of Sea Ports of Ukraine.

According to the AMP, the highest cargo handling volumes are observed in the ports of Greater Odesa. Since the beginning of the year, they have handled 20.7 million tons of cargo. In particular, the Pivdenny Port handled 10.6 million tons, the Chornomorsk Port 6.6 million tons, and the Odesa Port 3.5 million tons.

The ports of the Danube region — Izmail, Reni, and Ust-Dunaisk — together handled over 2.3 million tons of cargo.

“The decrease in cargo turnover is linked to the reduction of agricultural land and a decline in production in export-oriented sectors, particularly metallurgy, which before the war exported up to 80% of its products,” explained the AMP.

It is noted that globally, cargo handling is also declining due to market instability and disruptions in logistics.

Reminder:

  • Ukraine's turnover in 2024 increased by 13% compared to 2023, reaching $112.3 billion (in 2023 — $99.4 billion, in 2022 — $99.7 billion).
  • During January-March, goods worth $18.5 billion were imported into Ukraine, while exports amounted to $9.9 billion.
