Misleading Emails Sent to Ukrainians in the US
This week, some Ukrainians residing in the US under the humanitarian program received erroneous emails regarding the cancellation of their status.
According to an article by Reuters, shared by "European Truth".
The emails stated that their status was revoked and they had seven days to leave the country, or else "the federal government will find you".
The message stated: "If you do not leave the United States immediately, you will become subject to potential law enforcement actions that may lead to your deportation. DHS is canceling your humanitarian status. Do not attempt to stay in the United States".
However, on Friday, April 4th, a spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security announced that the email was sent in error and that the program for Ukrainians established after the Russian invasion in 2022 was not terminated. It is unclear how many Ukrainians received this email.
On the same day, the Department of Homeland Security sent a follow-up email stating that the previous directive was incorrect and that "the conditions of your humanitarian status remain unchanged at this time".
It is worth noting that in January, after Donald Trump took office as President, officials from the Department of Homeland Security ordered the suspension of several programs that allowed migrants to temporarily reside in the United States, including a key initiative that provided entry for Ukrainians.
