Energy Independence in Odesa: New Community Projects
The municipality of Odesa, in collaboration with the Government of Japan and UNDP, along with support from international partners in Norway and Sweden, is implementing a project to construct energy generation facilities based on gas engine generators with a total capacity of around 30 MW.
This initiative is part of a decentralization strategy aimed at enhancing the energy resilience and security of the Odesa community.
The first cogeneration unit has been connected and is already supplying one of the city’s boiler houses.
«This unit can produce 3.3 MW per hour. The boiler requires about half of that. We plan to redirect the remainder to support other critical infrastructure facilities,» stated the Mayor of Odesa.
Currently, work is underway to connect three more cogeneration units that have already arrived in the city.
In total, UNDP has ordered 9 units for Odesa with a combined capacity of 30 MW.
Additionally, 7 cogeneration units from the German agency GIZ have arrived in Odesa. All of them will be installed in district boiler houses, with two already in the process of being connected. Soon, components for the remaining five will be delivered.
