Celebrating 60 Years of Friendship: Odesa and Yokohama
Odesa is celebrating 60 years of friendly relations with Yokohama.
For a week, Odesa is hosting Japanese culture days dedicated to this significant anniversary.
Today, the I. Ya. Franko Central Library became a hub for visitors to explore the enchanting world of Japanese culture.
Creative children's groups and young artists from Odesa showcased Japan's rich traditions and unique cultural heritage.
The Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine, Mr. Masashi Nakagome, in his video address, reaffirmed Japan's unwavering support for Ukraine and emphasized the importance of cultural cooperation in strengthening the bond between our nations.
The Yokohama City Hall also contributed to the celebration with a video presentation. Guests of the photo exhibition had the chance to learn more about our sister city.
“Odesa is honored to call Japan a friend. We became sister cities exactly 60 years ago. Our relationship exemplifies stable international friendship and cultural exchange, particularly significant during the last three years of war in Ukraine,” noted Ivan Liptuga, the Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Culture, and Marketing.
Yokohama provides support on many levels: Odesa receives essential humanitarian aid and organizes exchanges for youth in arts and sports. Together, we are rebuilding a kindergarten after enemy attacks, developing cogeneration technologies, and formulating a post-war city recovery plan.
This is a story of true friendship that transcends borders, language barriers, and cultural differences.
The best way for Odesans to express their gratitude is to embrace this beautiful culture and honor our partnership.
