Stormwater System Maintenance in Odesa: Recent Achievements

The municipal enterprise «City Roads» regularly undertakes measures to keep the stormwater drainage system in optimal condition.

Experts perform repairs and cleaning of storm sewers, catch basin grates, wells, and specialized hydraulic structures (drainage ditches, buffer ponds) from sludge, leaves, and debris.

Stormwater drainage maintenance work in Odesa is conducted on a planned basis throughout the city. During heavy rain, municipal crews additionally work on the streets, clearing catch basin grates of fallen leaves and debris to ensure effective water drainage.

In the first nine months of the current year, the enterprise carried out cleaning of: ditches and channels - 15,369 linear meters, catch basins - 3,902, sewers - 4,997 linear meters, and also flushed pipes - 21,479 linear meters.

Additionally, grass was mowed along the ditches and channels (10,060 linear meters) and 1,735.6 square meters of the buffer pond were cleaned.

Cleaning of the stormwater drainage systems is done manually and with the help of heavy machinery from the enterprise: excavators, motor graders, and high-pressure hydraulic units for flushing pipes.

The specialists also repair wells, replace pipes in catch basins, raise grates to road level, and restore the covers of inspection wells.

Since the beginning of 2024, the enterprise has installed and replaced 55 grates on catch basins and repaired 26 catch basins with casting replacement.

During operation, catch basin grates tend to sink, causing potholes that can lead to accidents. Specialists from «City Roads» regularly address this issue.

Since the start of this year, the municipal workers have raised 91 sunken catch basin grates to road level and installed 19 inspection wells at the same level as the roadway. Repairs were also performed on 8 inspection wells with casting replacement.

Moreover, since the beginning of this year, the enterprise has repaired 41 linear meters of sewers, conducted video inspections of 556 linear meters of sewers, and pumped out 1,039 cubic meters of stormwater from the roadway.
