Updated Information on Street Renaming in Ukraine
The public organization «Decolonization. Ukraine» has released updated information regarding the streets that need renaming in Ukraine as part of the decommunization and decolonization efforts. A total of 228 streets in the Odesa region are included in this list.
The Odesa region ranks fifth among Ukrainian regions for the number of streets that require renaming. The Zaporizhia region remains the leader, with 1001 streets needing decolonization.
«This list is not exhaustive, as there are streets named after local communist figures that few people are aware of,» the organization noted, adding that the map will be updated as necessary.
It is also important to mention that in some regions, such as Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv, activists believe the renaming process has already been completed.
The YouTube channel «Odesa Life» has launched a new series titled «Streets of Odesa: Then – Now», which tells the stories of the people after whom the streets of Odesa and the surrounding region are named.
Previously, the «Decolonization. Ukraine» project published a map of monuments and plaques dedicated to Pushkin that have not yet been removed. According to their estimates, the largest number is located in Odesa. Additionally, there have been proposals in Odesa to rename Mark Twain Park.
