Young Ukrainian Karatekas Shine at World Championship
From October 9 to 13, the World Championship for cadets, juniors, and youth took place in Lido di Jesolo, Italy. This tournament, held in the suburbs of Venice, gathered over 2,000 young athletes from 117 countries, marking a record attendance.
The Ukrainian team featured 38 athletes representing 17 clubs from 9 regions, including 8 competitors from Odessa.
15-year-old Odessa karateka Maxim Vechkanov (SK Royal Team, coaches Vladimir Zaretsky and Alexey Konovalov) emerged as the champion in the cadet category under 52 kg.
Maxim's gold medal from the World Championship adds to the silver he earned at the European Championship earlier this year in February.
This marks the fourth medal (second gold and first in the cadet category) for athletes from the region in the history of youth world championships.
