Successful Procedure at Odesa Hospital

At the Odesa City Clinical Hospital No. 10, a complex procedure was performed that saved the life of a patient who suffered a stroke.

According to Alexander Skrypka, the head of the interventional radiology department, this case was one of the most challenging, involving damage to the brain stem. The basilar artery was nearly completely obstructed by an atherosclerotic plaque. Such strokes are among the most dangerous, and without urgent medical intervention, survival chances are minimal.

The specialists decided to operate and perform angioplasty on the artery. Hospital No. 10 has experience with this treatment method in cardiology for atherosclerosis of coronary vessels, but its application to cerebral vessels is an innovative technology in Ukraine.

The surgery lasted about an hour. The narrowed artery was widened using a special balloon, followed by a balloon with a drug coating.

The patient will still require rehabilitation for full recovery, but already she can talk, move, and has every chance of returning to a normal life.

Hospital No. 10 is equipped with its own angiograph, and the city authorities continually upgrade the hospital with the latest equipment. This allows medical staff to implement modern global techniques, saving lives and preserving the health of patients.
