New Weight Control Initiative in Odessa

The Odessa City Health Department has initiated a new project titled «Health in Check».

The primary aim of this initiative is to reduce obesity rates among adults and children, enhance the prevention of related diseases, and improve the overall quality of life for the residents of Odessa.

«Addressing excessive weight is a critical focus that has gained prominence in many countries. Less than half of Ukrainians maintain a healthy weight, with many facing overweight issues. Weight management and a mindful approach to nutrition are essential for long-term health», — stated Levon Nikogosyan, head of the city health department.

As part of the project, over 350 family doctors and pediatricians, along with primary care nurses, will receive training on obesity management.

Leading specialists from Odessa National Medical University and the Regional Family Medicine Association will conduct the training.

Topics covered will include how to advise adult patients and children, proper nutrition, child feeding practices, and monitoring eating habits, physical activity, and sleep patterns. Screening for obesity-related conditions will also be implemented.

The first session of the project commenced on March 4, 2025, at Primary Health Care Center No. 4. The initial group consists of 15 doctors and 15 family nurses who will undergo a two-day professional course on obesity and patient motivation techniques.

«Obesity is not merely an aesthetic concern; it is a serious chronic condition. Initially, individuals may not experience any symptoms, but over time, complications such as high blood pressure, fat accumulation in the liver, and potential liver cancer may arise. Those with obesity can suffer from diabetes for years without awareness, leading to cardiovascular issues, heart attacks, and strokes», — emphasized Valentina Velichko, director of the Children's Consultation and Diagnostics Center.

Health professionals offer simple advice to help maintain well-being:

1. When thirsty, drink plain water. Avoid sugary drinks between meals.

2. Aim to include at least half a kilogram of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet; they are high in water and fiber and provide lasting satiety.

3. Dedicate an hour each day to physical activity, such as brisk walking, squats, or exercises.
