Winter Conservation of Fountains in Odessa
Since early October, specialists from the municipal enterprise "Service Center" have begun preparations for winterizing the city fountains.
Conserving fountains is a crucial task. To ensure their safety during the cold months, the water supply systems need to be blown out, nozzles removed, and both electrical and pumping equipment disassembled. After disassembly, specialists inspect the equipment and carry out repairs if necessary.
Typically, fountains in residential areas are the first to be winterized, followed by those in parks. Fountains located in the central part of Odessa are conserved last.
In recent years, the Service Center has started fully sealing some fountain basins, particularly in the City Garden and Shevchenko Park. Since the war began, four fountains in the UNESCO zone have been completely winterized and did not operate this year.
The process of reopening the fountains will commence in spring, usually starting with those in the city center by April 1.
Note
The Service Center manages 27 city fountains. In 2024, 17 fountains were reopened. All of them are outdoors, and their operation is contingent on weather conditions.
Fifteen employees ensure the maintenance of these fountains, including cleaning, filter and nozzle maintenance, and water level monitoring.
Fountains also suffer from vandalism, leading to unscheduled repairs. The fountain on Krymsky Boulevard frequently faces such issues, where teenagers damage the equipment.
Despite the challenges of wartime, the specialists of the Service Center continue their important work.
