Winter Preparedness: New Initiatives by City Roads Utility

In order to maintain road safety and effectively respond to winter conditions, the City Roads Utility is implementing a series of new initiatives.

As is customary, street cleaning operations are wrapped up in November, and equipment is being upgraded. Tanks are removed from washing vehicles and replaced with spreaders for sand and salt.

Winter attachments are being installed, and most machines are fitted with snow plows. Additionally, all equipment undergoes inspection and preventive maintenance. After the preparation is complete, the special vehicles will be tested on the premises of the utility.

The City Roads Utility has snow removal trucks, sand spreaders, graders, excavators, snow clearing machines «Globus», loaders, combined road machines, and other equipment at its disposal. Throughout the autumn-winter season of 2024-2025, 104 units of equipment and 560 workers will be involved in snow removal and ice control. As of November 4, 37 units have already been modified and are ready for use. The preparation of machines is to be fully completed by the end of November this year.

The utility is also preparing sand-salt mixtures for anti-icing. To cope with adverse weather conditions, it has secured 11,860 tons of reagents for processing road surfaces.

The City Roads Utility has developed 17 routes for snow removal vehicles, ensuring the rapid clearance of roads from snow drifts and ice elimination. Additionally, 54 routes have been designated for treating streets with reagents to minimize hazards during icy conditions.

Starting December 1, 2024, the utility will traditionally commence round-the-clock shifts for prompt responses in case of worsening weather conditions. The dispatch rooms are prepared, and the staff operating the equipment is provided with winter clothing.
