Launch of a New Ophthalmology Center in Odesa

A new ophthalmology trauma center has been opened in Odesa with the support of the Department of Health of the Odesa City Council. This specialized unit will operate 24/7, offering crucial assistance for eye injuries to both residents and visitors.

The trauma center caters to cases of: domestic and occupational eye injuries, wounds, burns, chemical injuries, foreign body incidents, and sudden vision deterioration post-injury. Medical assistance is provided free of charge under the state medical guarantees program.

Starting in September 2025, hospital No. 10 will also launch an ophthalmological service. The trauma center will ensure round-the-clock specialized urgent ophthalmological care. Additionally, a planned ophthalmological clinic will continue operating, equipped to modern medical technology standards.

Separate rooms and a procedure room have been established for patients with combined eye injuries and for inpatient treatment of other ophthalmic conditions. The operating block has been upgraded with an ophthalmic microscope and other equipment for a wide range of ophthalmic surgical interventions, particularly for cataracts and glaucoma.

According to the General Director of hospital No. 10, Denis Sebov, the hospital is gaining new medical services, essential for cluster facilities as part of the national health system's infrastructure reform, aimed at ensuring a multidisciplinary approach in diagnosing and treating diseases and enhancing the quality of medical care.

Thus, Odesa now has its own comprehensive diagnostic and inpatient ophthalmological service. The need for urgent ophthalmological care is particularly pressing during wartime due to the increased risk of eye injuries from enemy attacks.

The opening of the eye trauma center is not just a new step in the development of hospital No. 10 but also a significant reinforcement of the emergency and specialized care system in Odesa. As part of the city’s health program, sets of lenses and other medical supplies are being procured for cataract surgery, which residents can receive free of charge.

The new ophthalmological service was presented at a conference where the structure and capabilities of the ophthalmological service were discussed, as well as its integration and cooperation with other structural units and city medical institutions. A master class on ophthalmoscopy was also conducted for doctors.
