Health Awareness Day in Odesa: Diabetes Prevention

Last week, a health awareness event was organized in Odesa to promote diabetes prevention and early diagnosis for both adults and children.

This initiative was supported by the Department of Health of the Odesa City Council and the local health center.

During the event, doctors provided blood glucose and blood pressure measurements, height and weight assessments, and BMI calculations, along with consultations. Electronic referrals for additional laboratory tests were also created as needed.

Additionally, healthcare professionals engaged with visitors to discuss diabetes prevention, risk factors for type II diabetes, and ways to adopt a healthy lifestyle and dietary habits.

Diabetes is a chronic endocrine disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, leading to serious complications such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney damage.

Symptoms of diabetes include thirst, constant hunger, frequent urination, sudden weight loss or gain, fatigue, and vision problems.

There are two types of diabetes: Type I, which is insulin-dependent, and Type II, associated with insulin resistance. Type II diabetes can often be prevented through lifestyle changes.

Risk factors for Type II diabetes include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, stress, and age-related changes.

Preventive measures include maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, eating a balanced diet, quitting smoking, and regularly monitoring blood sugar levels.
