Japan Extends Support to Ukraine

During his visit to Ukraine, the newly appointed Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya emphasized the importance of continuing support for Ukraine, particularly announcing a new aid package for the energy sector.

The Japanese government is a key partner of UNDP in Ukraine, consistently funding the procurement of equipment for the restoration of critical infrastructure.

Odessa has already received its first gas-powered cogeneration unit with a capacity of 3.3 MW, and its installation is currently underway. The city expects two more similar units in the near future, which will cover approximately one-third of the energy needs for water supply, heating, and sewage systems.

The mayor of Odessa noted that amidst the full-scale war, the city is actively working on establishing its own energy system, even under the threat of bombardment.

«We are immensely grateful to Japan, our sister city Yokohama, which was the first to support us, as well as to the UNDP team and all other countries that are helping build our resilience alongside the people of Odessa», - stated Gennady Trukhanov.
