Blood Donation Initiative at ONU: Celebrating 160 Years of Service
The Odesa National University named after I. Mechnikov, with support from the «Donor Odesa» project, held an initiative titled «160 Blood Donors for 160 Years of ONU».
The event was organized by the administration, trade union committees of staff and students at the university. Medical personnel from the Odesa Regional Blood Transfusion Station facilitated the blood donations.
The campaign was conducted in two phases, with the first phase concluding in spring. The second phase was timed to coincide with World Kindness Day in November. On November 13 and 14, ONU representatives donated blood at two locations: in the Kyiv district at the Faculty of Hydrometeorology and Ecology, and in the Primorsky district at the Department of Health and Safety and Natural Education.
«The donation event continued even during the blackout. Despite the power outage at one location, we utilized a generator to keep the necessary equipment operational. By donating our blood, we can save our defenders who, under much harsher conditions, risk their lives for our safety and Ukraine's independence,» said Vadim Penov, the initiative's initiator and associate professor of physiology, health, and safety.
Thanks to collaborative efforts, over 170 people donated blood at ONU. The initiative included not only students and staff but also their family members who expressed a desire to contribute to the support of Ukraine.
Additionally, ONU students and faculty engaged in significant awareness-raising efforts about the importance of blood donation on social media.
Every blood donation can save up to three lives.
Kindness begins with us. Goodness is what saves lives.
