Orban Discusses Hungary's Stance on Ukraine and the EU

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, stated that the results of the so-called "referendum" initiated by his government led to halting Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

Orban expressed that Hungary "understands the aspirations of Ukrainians and their heroic struggle".

"We also see that they need help, but we want to assist in a way that does not harm ourselves. Ukraine's EU membership would mean our own destruction. We would be drawn into a war with Russia, bringing it onto EU territory, and thus onto Hungary", – emphasized the Prime Minister.

"Yesterday, thanks to over two million votes on Voks2025, we prevented Ukraine from joining the EU", – he added.

Orban also stated that Ukraine remains an "undefined entity" not by its own fault.

"We don't even know what Ukraine is today, where its borders lie. This danger existed in other former Soviet bloc countries. That's why they were first admitted to NATO, as NATO could guarantee those borders. Only afterward did the EU accept other relevant countries", – he continued, adding that admitting Ukraine to NATO would mean immediate war.
